Battery-powered technology has revolutionised lawnmowers, making them a cordless, seamless and environmentally friendly way to care for your lawn. The mobility and efficiency offered by batteries have made modern lawnmowers indispensable tools for garden care.

What types are there?

Lead-acid batteries are of the same type as conventional batteries, with a higher weight and lower energy efficiency. Nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries are an older technology, but still offer excellent performance. The latter are used less often nowadays because the environmental impact of cadmium is not exactly environmentally friendly. Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are a modern choice, lightweight and long-lasting, and are now being used in many new lawnmowers.

You can contribute to the long life of your mower battery by using it according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Store the battery in a cool and dry place to prevent damage and avoid corrosion by regular cleaning. Avoid draining the battery completely or overcharging it, neither of which is good for it. Also, always use a charger that is recommended by the manufacturer. Also, remember to regularly maintain your battery and mower to ensure long life and efficient operation.

How do I replace the battery in my lawnmower?

It is important that the battery of the lawnmower is always replaced with the battery switched off and in full compliance with safety regulations. If you are unsure how to replace the battery or if your mower is of a more complex type, you may want to seek professional help. For a simple type, the process is as follows: make sure you have the right size and voltage battery. First charge the new battery as recommended by the manufacturer. Generally, manufacturers recommend that you fully charge the new battery before you use the mower. Once this is done, switch the mower off and remove the old battery. Put the new one in place and make sure it fits properly and is securely fastened. Connect the cables to the new battery. Make sure that the positive and negative wires are correctly connected to the correct poles.

What are the signs that your lawnmower battery has failed?

One of the most obvious signs of this can be if the battery is draining quickly or no longer charging properly. It is also not a good sign if the battery is deformed or leaking. In the latter 2 cases, it is worth replacing it as soon as possible.
