WHAT ARE ISLAND AND HYBRID SOLAR SYSTEMS?
We call solar systems any system consisting of solar panels, inverters, mounting brackets and other accessories that are installed in a house, institution or other place to produce energy from solar radiation. By solar operation we mean a system that can work in conjunction with a battery. We can store the energy generated from the sun in a battery pack and use it when we need it. Another important function of the battery is to bridge the short periods when there is not enough solar energy due to a cloud, for example.
Hybrid solar systems are basically a mix of back- and islanded systems. These systems are able to feed back into the grid or run off batteries. This allows us to take advantage of both types of systems within a single system.
WHAT TYPES OF BATTERY-POWERED KITS ARE AVAILABLE?
Our solar systems are basically equipped with 2 types of batteries. One type is AGM and the other is LiFePo4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate). It is essential that the solar system is fitted with a maintenance-free working battery. Starter batteries are not suitable for such a system as they will fail very quickly.
One of the main advantages of AGM batteries over LiFePo4 batteries is their price. They are significantly cheaper, but we can use less of their capacity (40-50%) if we don't want to shorten their lifetime, and they can be charged and discharged with less current. We recommend them for those who want a lower cost of ownership or who do not want to use the batteries to their full capacity.
LiFePo4 batteries are one of the most advanced battery technologies of our time. They can be used up to 90% of their capacity. Although the price is higher, in the long run it is worth choosing this type as their lifetime can be several times that of an AGM battery.
